Low Harrogate News from 2017 onwards
With effect from January 2017, all relevant news will be communicated by Liz Thornton, our General Secretary, to all members using e-mail. This approach was successfully introduced and fully implemented during 2016, and will avoid duplicated effort.
Low Harrogate News 2016
The Christmas Get Together was held on Saturday, 10th December and was well attended. Photos have been added to our Gallery.
At the club's AGM, Peter Syson was elected as President, and Carol Hawkins was elected as Vice-President for the 2017 season. The outgoing President, Tony Marsland, reluctantly retired a year early due to poor health. He was warmly thanked for his contribution in 2016 which turned out to be a great season.
Dave Moon has kindly volunteered to help maintain the club's website in 2017 as and when needed. Tony Marsland and Dave Moon will maintain the website as directed by our Executive Committee.
It's turned into a golden month! On 26th September, Low Harrogate received a GOLD MEDAL certificate from 'Harrogate in Bloom' which is an excellent achievement for our grounds maintenance team and a fitting reward for all their hard work. Many thanks to everyone involved.
Our last club competition of the season was the October Pairs played on Sunday, 25th September and it was a good and enjoyable day. The winners were Robin Addis and Derek Wilson, and the runners-up were Jo Bonsel and Ivan Ravilious. Well done to everyone and especially Jo who is a new member.
More good news! Low Harrogate's Mick Steel and Peter Syson have won the Open Nidall's Pairs Trophy at Knaresborough on Friday, 23rd September winning a first prize of £200. Congratulations to both of you.
President resigns due to poor health on Thursday, 22nd September. Sadly, Tony Marsland's impaired speech has enforced his resignation as this great season draws to a close. Peter Syson will deputize until his formal appointment as President at our AGM in November.
LH Vets A team win the double! On Monday, 19th September LH Vets A won the Division 1 Cup beating Tarnfield A in a close match by 9 points at Wetherby. A great end to a great season, and very pleasing that reserves Mike Callister, Bernie Poulter and Derek Wilson all did very well in the final to help win the cup showing the strength of our club this season. Many congratulations to Dave Moon as captain, and to all the Vets A players on a great Double winning season!
On Tuesday, 6th September our LH C team finished runners-up of division 4 in fine style, and will be promoted from division 4 to division 3 next season. Well done to John Wardle as captain, and to the whole team, for such a fine season including their England Cup win too!
On Sunday, 4th September Mike Adams was in great form during the semi-final, and final, to win the Lloyd Holden Trophy against the unlucky runner-up, Nigel Swainson. Thanks to all who participated to make it such an enjoyable day, and to Dave Moon for organising the competition.
Two titles for Low Harrogate in two days !! Good reasons to attend the League Presentation Evenings! These are excellent results for our club and a round of applause is richly deserved for our players.
On Thursday, 1st September, our 'Taddy' LH A team ended the season as worthy champions of Division 2 in the Tadcaster league after leading for most of the season. A great team effort so well done to Chris Olding as captain, and to the whole team.
On Friday, 2nd September, our Vets A team ended the season as worthy champions of Division 1 in the Vets league breaking the domination of Knaresborough A after many years. Well done to Dave Moon as captain, and to the whole team, for an excellent result going one better than last season.
See our menu League Competitions for a list of Low Harrogate players featuring in the top 10 averages in each division extracted from Bowlsnet. It's an impressively long list, but who's on it?
Many congratulations to our LH B team on being promoted from division 3 to division 2 next season (confirmed 24th August), with 2 matches to spare. Well done to Nigel Swainson as captain, and to his whole team. More good news expected soon!
Well done to Low Harrogate's David and Angela Spilsbury for winning the Thorners Pairs competition.
A big 'Thank you!' to Pauline Parker, for the hosting of a very well organised Federation match on Sunday, 21st August. We received many compliments. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to a successful day.
The Robinson Bowl semi-finals were held on Saturday, 20th August and Mick Steel won the trophy against Chris Olding. Congratulations to both of you.
On 20th August, your committee requested HABA to acknowledge and advise us on our formal request to enter an extra team in both the Harrogate Evening League and Vets League in 2017. We will update you as soon as we receive a reply with good or bad news. Fingers crossed.
The Vets Trophy semi-finals and final were closely contested on Saturday, 13th August with some excellent bowling. David Spilsbury extended his winning run against a gallant runner-up, Graham Patrick.
Excellent news! Our LH C team won the England Cup on Friday 5th August after a very close match against Starbeck's 3rd team. Amazingly, the teams were level on aggregate points, but we won the cup on a countback of matches as we won 6 matches to their 2. Well done to John Wardle, as Captain, and to everyone who played in the competition. Commiserations to the Starbeck 3rd team, and many thanks to Bilton Dragon as excellent hosts.
Congratulations to our Foursomes & BBQ winners David Spilsbury and Malcolm Davies, and to gallant runners-up Nigel Swainson and Bob Simmonds. Bob has only been a member for 4 weeks so may have set a club record. Who knows? Malcolm is a new member too! Well done to all. It was a very enjoyable day with fine weather, a delicious barbecue, and popular raffle. Many thanks to all who contributed to a very well organised day. It was very pleasing to see so many new members getting involved too.
Hot news is that our honourable member, Sid Brown, won the 2016 'Over 90's' bowling competition in North Leeds. Well done, Sid. "You gave us a 'Master Class' in bowling" stated his lucky scorer! Not bad for 95!!!
Please see all our latest photos under menu option Gallery.
Ann Wilson has taken some great photos - please check out our gallery. This season's club competition winners added too thanks to Ivan Ravilious and Carol Hawkins.
On Sunday, 10th July, the reinstated Ladies Singles Competition was won by Carol Hawkins with Ann Wilson runner-up. Well done to both!
Our Taddy A team has made an outstanding start to the season - won 12 and lost 1. Other teams are chasing promotion too, and in division 4, LH D beat the LH C team 6-4 demonstrating that we have many good players who are difficult to separate. Their previous match ended 5-5, and they are second and third in the table. 'Well done!' from Tony Marsland, our President to all our teams in the Harrogate, Vets and Taddy leagues. See Bowlsnet for details. Please note that we are considering a 5th team for next year if enough registered members are interested and keen to play. Watch this space.
The social bowling extended to Monday afternoons - as well as Wednesday afternoons - is proving to be very popular. Well done to Pauline Parker and Ann Wilson for organising them.
The third Captains meeting was held on 23rd June and all squads for the Harrogate Evening League, Vets and Taddy Leagues were agreed by the captains. All nine squads will be displayed on the notice board from July, and we would like you to fill in your unavailability due to holidays etc on these lists to help our captains, please. The squads will be reviewed again at the end of the season, and adjustments made based on the performance of team players. Club captain, Tony Marsland, congratulated all the captains and vice-captains for a very good start to the season.
Well done to both Anne Wilson for winning the Burwell Cup on 12th June, and to the gallant runner-up Derek Wilson.
Robin Addis has kindly agreed to assume the role of Friendlies Co-ordinator with effect from June 2016. In the meantime, Tony Marsland has organised the initial friendlies. Sadly, the May 19th friendly was cancelled due to a flooded green, but we hope for better weather on June 2nd.
Our second Captains Meeting was held on May 12th and the new squad system seems to be working well, and early season results are promising. The next meeting is planned for end-June as a half-way point of the season. All captains and vice-captains are invited.
Our first club competition of the season, the Harold Bell Trophy, was closely contested by 5 divisions of 4 players on Sunday, May 8th. It was so close that 2 division winners had to play the best of 3 ends to go through to the semi-final and Mike Callister was the unlucky loser. Angela Spilsbury beat Derek Wilson and Alan Winstanley beat Mike Adams in the semi-finals, and Alan had a good win against Angela in the final. The weather was fine, the green was good, the organisation was good, the food was good, and the bowling was good. Everyone enjoyed it, and it was pleasing to see so many new members competing well off a handicap of +8. Many thanks to David Spilsbury and Steve Johnson for their fine work.
Our Low Harrogate Vets A team made the pairs final against Knaresborough A held at Wetherby. Well done to the whole team for a great effort.
Welcome to our 2016 bowling season - did you notice our new sign?
Steve Johnson has been very busy preparing our green for the new season, and it is looking good considering all the wet weather we have had.
A Captains Meeting was held on 24th March 2016 and all nine captains agreed to adopt a new squad system as introduced by Tony Marsland and Peter Syson. The squad system will enable each team captain to select their best team using a combination of Bowlsnet performance information, availability and reliability. We will monitor our progress in May and we will overcome any teething problems during the initial weeks. Meanwhile, many pairs competitions will get us started. Enjoy your bowling!
Committee Meeting February 2016
Pauline Parker will be organising our social bowling and catering this year, and Peter Brack has been co-opted and will organise friendlies. Details to be announced soon. Your Committee agreed to start using e-mail to correspond with as many members as possible to help reduce our costs. Our General Secretary, Liz Thornton will be contacting you all very soon to explain in more detail. We agreed to replace our outside board to communicate our official name 'Low Harrogate Crown Green Bowling Club', update our contact number, promote our website and include the Sport England logo. Peter Syson will be organising this before the 2016 season starts.
Robin Addis has kindly volunteered to be Captain of our Vets 'C' team in 2016, and we hope you will support him in his new role. Thanks Robin. All captains and vice-captains are now in place and you will find details in our menu About Us.
Low Harrogate News 2015
Xmas Get Together on 5th December 2015
Our President, Tony Marsland, warmly welcomed everyone and was pleased to see so many new members present. About 40 members attended and our clubhouse was bulging. The food was good, the wine flowed, and our raffle was a great success. Please view our Gallery menu option.
Many thanks to all those members who kindly donated prizes for the raffle and donated items for the Xmas hampers, and to those who spent time making up the hampers, and to those who bought raffle tickets. A special 'Thank you' to Carol Hawkins who organised this event so well.
Tadcaster AGM on 30th November 2015
Tony Marsland represented Low Harrogate at this AGM and the main points were:
- Almscliffe have entered a second team, but there will be only 8 teams in division 4, and 10 teams in divisions 1, 2 and 3
- the insurance premium for Tadcaster trophies is poor value so will not be renewed
- clubs were asked to consider whether the Tadcaster merits would be more popular if handicapped on the basis of div 1, 0 handicap; div 2, 2 handicap; div 3, 4 handicap; and div 4, 6 handicap (perhaps this approach could be applied to our in-house club competitions too?)
- the presentation evening was a great success but it was noted that only half the clubs were in attendance (perhaps the clubs missing didn't win anything, including us, but we will keep trying!)
- there is a vacancy for Honarary Secretary but no-one present volunteered (despite Christine giving one year's notice) so an EGM may be required on 25th January 2016. It was stated that many clubs had never had league officers
- a rule will be introduced to increase a club fine from £5 to £10
- we need to ensure our e-mail contacts are up to date for 2016.
Low Harrogate AGM on 11th November 2015
Tony Marsland was elected President, Peter Syson as Vice-President, Liz Thornton as General Secretary, and Pauline Parker as a new Committee Member.
Our new Head Greenkeeper, Steve Johnson, was thanked for his excellent work.
Captains and Vice-Captains were appointed for 2016, but there is still a vacancy for the Vets 'C' Captain who needs to be appointed before next season. Any member interested should contact Tony Marsland on 01423 548484, please.
Congratulations to LH 'A' on promotion to division 1, and commiserations to LH 'B' unexpectedly relegated to division 3, and to LH 'C' relegated to division 4. Tony Marsland explained that many of our players will now be expected to play on a different night, and we will provide confirmation as soon as we receive the league fixtures in February 2016.
Carol Hawkins was pleased to announce that the Committee had agreed to re-instate the Ladies Singles competition in 2016, and she would be happy to organise it. We have a number of competitive ladies who should make this a success.
During his speech, Tony emphasised the goodwill of our members, and thanked everyone who had contributed to the numerous roles that our members kindly carry out, such as green and grounds maintenance, building maintenance etc. (Please see menu option Committee and Helpers for details.)
Tony outlined the key points from the HABA AGM, please see below for important details.
Retiring officers were David Moon, Carol Hawkins and Keith Helsby. All were very warmly thanked for their excellent voluntary work during previous years. Happy bowling to them all next season!
Harrogate Amateur Bowling Association (HABA) AGM on 2nd November 2015
Tony Marsland and Peter Syson attended this meeting without supporting documentation due to an administration error, and we won't let this happen again. Key points impacting our club:
- Low Harrogate 'B' was unexpectedly relegated from division 2 to 3. The Harrogate Evening League Fixtures Secretary, Ian Kennedy, explained that this was to strengthen competition, and Tony stated that we believe in sportsmanship and meritocracy as a club. We now look forward to a fair, consistently applied approach to promotion and relegation in future, and without any bias to specific clubs.
- A number of vacancies exist at HABA level and we agreed to make our members aware of these at our Low Harrogate AGM (done on 11th November but no volunteers).
- Veterans reaching the age of 60 during the same calendar year as the bowling season will be eligible to play in that season. This means that some players may be playing in the Vets league at 59 in future, rather than 60. A proposal to reduce the age limit to 55 was rejected.
- A player in a lower team may play another league game for a higher team in the same week up to 3 times a season strictly for club shortages. Previously, this could only be done once in a season. The Fixtures Secretary must be notified.
- The Federation team is affiliated to the HABA, but players representing the Federation (North Yorkshire) who do not play for any HABA club will not be allowed to play in our HABA merits.
Club Competition Photos 2015 (Vets Trophy, Robinson Bowl, & October Pairs)
Have you seen our latest photos in our gallery? Many thanks to Ivan Ravillious and Carol Hawkins for supplying these. Please view our latest competition winners, and the sweat from our end of season green maintenance. Great stuff.
Executive Committee on 3rd September 2015
After 11 years of great service to our club, Carol Hawkins has decided to resign from her role as General Secretary following our annual AGM in November. It will give her the opportunity to spend more time enjoying herself bowling, and provides an opportunity for someone else to take up this important role. Please see our Notice Board advertising this vacancy, and don't hesitate to volunteer if you think you have the administration skills, experience of e-mail, and ability to create and maintain documents such as Agenda and Minutes. You would be our prime contact with Harrogate & Tadcaster Leagues, and deal with the correspondence and fixture lists too. You will be supported by our Events Co-ordinator.
This follows the resignation of Keith Helsby as our Head Greenkeeper after 7 years of great service to our club in August, due to other commitments. We are pleased to inform you that Steve Johnson has assumed this responsibility after working with Keith for many of those years, and he has the knowledge and experience to maintain our green to the excellent standard that has been achieved. Steve outlined his plans to the Committee and his requests for end of season expenditure were approved and green closure on Monday, 28th September to enable essential maintenance. He will continue to be ably supported by Peter Syson, Ivan Ravillious and Colin Hayes who rotate and cut our green several times per week.
After such great service to our club, words seem inadequate to express our deep gratitude for the contributions of both Carol and Keith, but we would like to say a heart-felt "Well done!" to you both and wish you happy bowling in future.
Foursomes and BBQ in August 2015
Have you seen the latest photos in our Gallery and updates under Club Competitions?
Executive Committee on 17th July 2015
We have agreed to appoint an Events Coordinator to manage a pool of members who are willing to assist in the 'Hosting of Events' with immediate effect. This may appeal to new members in particular, and we would like you to assist Tony Marsland by reading the urgent notice on our Notice Board, and entering your name on the list to assist for the remainder of the season if you are willing and able to help. You will gain valuable experience and help us to spread the workload of running our club. Your co-operation and support would be greatly appreciated so please check out what it is all about!
Well done to our club members Carol Hawkins, Sarah Ravilious and Angela Spilsbury for representing the Harrogate District in the Yorkshire Inter-District Ladies Competition on 14th June 2015.
Please note that your Committee has authorised a 'Monthly Team Selection Meeting' for the Harrogate League to be held following each Committee meeting commencing June 2015. The aim is for all captains and vice-captains to attend this meeting and consider players who are appropriate for each team taking into account holidays on the 'Holiday Sheet' in our clubhouse, starred players, current form, potential of new members, etc. We aim to be fair to all our club members and minimise mistakes, but we will be unable to please everyone. Team selection can be very fluid from week to week as you will gather from the number of players who have played in each team, but we are doing our best.
Please note that our green will not be open to members until 10.00 am on league competition days, namely Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings so that our greenkeepers have time to cut the green and do whatever essential maintenance is required. We would appreciate your co-operation.
Peter Syson, with other member support, hosted a local group of 24 scouts on our green on a Wednesday night in June 2015. The scouts appeared to enjoy themselves by bowling between chairs etc to keep it light-hearted and fun, and we await any follow-up from juniors with interest.
Congratulations to Peter Syson on winning our Burwell Cup handicap competition on Sunday, June 7th, and to runner-up Alan Winstanley. Also, thanks to Ivan Ravilious for taking some good photos in our Gallery.
The Committee and all club members would like to thank Ted Rogers once again for his successful Sport England application last year, and for his overall contribution to our club. He is relocating for family reasons on May 27th, and we will miss him. Good luck, Ted! (Incidentally, he has already found another good club in Shrewsbury, and won their Silver Salver. Nice one, Ted.)
Congratulations to David Moon on winning our Harold Bell handicap competition on Sunday, May 20th, and to runner-up Peter Syson.
We would like to send our very best wishes to several members (and their families) who have been coping with various illnesses at the moment, and we wish their good health to return soon.
It has been very pleasing to see so many new members playing for our teams in May 2015, and we wish them all success and enjoyment. Robin Addis wryly remarked that he felt part of our club's youth policy!
Our Wednesday afternoon social bowling and new ladder system have both been successfully launched in April 2015. Many thanks to Sid Brown and Peter Syson respectively for organising these. Nice one!
Our President, David Moon, officially opened our season on March 22nd 2015, and it was well attended.
We are very proud for Sid Brown and Alan Westerman to be elected as Honarary Members for their long and outstanding contribution to our club, and they will be rewarded with free life membership from March 2015. 'Well done' to both of you, and they are still winning matches!
At our Committee Meeting on 4th February 2015, it was agreed to promote a new weekly Wednesday Social Bowling Afternoon between 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm for any member (current or new), and regardless of their experience. This will enable bowlers of all levels of ability to enjoy some friendly, social bowling, and meet more members of our club. The first session was organised by Sid Brown on Wednesday, March 25th 2015, and was very well attended. Also, Peter Syson will be introducing a new Ladder Competition on the 12th April, and the rules are as stated on the Club Notice Board. The entries have already exceeded 20 so happy bowling!
Hot news from the British Crown Green Bowling Association Newsletter dated 24th Jan 2015 regarding the Laws of the Game:
'The use of electronic cigarettes are not permitted whilst participating in the game of Crown Green Bowls.'
At our Christmas Get Together in December 2014, many members enjoyed the company, wine, teas and food. Many thanks for all her hard work goes to Carol Hawkins who was the main organiser of this event, and many more, and works perhaps harder than anyone else in the running of our club. We held a very successful raffle and raised £120 for our club. The last prize was 'Four Candles' and who could forget the classic 'The Two Ronnies' sketch?
Our Low Harrogate AGM in November 2014 was well attended and members were informed that the club membership subscription would remain at £50 pa in 2015. However, our President, David Moon, suggested that there may be an increase the following year.
During his President's address, David thanked the good work of Ted Rogers for his successful application to Sport England, and to Tony Marsland for managing the project in conjunction with the rest of our committee. We will benefit from the excellent equipment purchased to maintain our green for many years. Also, he thanked all committee members for helping to keep our club running smoothly, and to all members (too numerous to mention individually) who contributed to the maintenance of our crown green; clubhouse including refreshments and cleaning; and our grounds. Well done to everyone involved. In addition, he requested new members to support our club and help us during 2015.
David also mentioned that we would be constructing our website in time for the 2015 season, and hopes that you will enjoy viewing it. Incidentally, if you have any good ideas to help improve our website, or any feedback good or bad, please don't hesitate to contact Tony Marsland on 01423 548484 or e-mail him on firstname.lastname@example.org or use the Contact Us facility if you prefer, and he will be happy to respond.
We are delighted to tell you that at the Harrogate Amateur Bowling Association (HABA) AGM in October 2014, Carol Hawkins of Low Harrogate was elected Vice President of the HABA, and Peter Syson of Low Harrogate was elected Child Safety Officer of the HABA. Well done to both of them, and we are delighted that they will raise the profile of our club in the HABA. The other news that you may be interested in is that the Harrogate & District Veterans League will also be using the BowlsNet.org.uk website for the first time in 2015, so you can see exactly the same information for both the Harrogate & District Evening League and Harrogate & District Veterans League. It is very good value for HABA, and we encourage you all to enjoy viewing this website for free.
